ITSA's story

The seed for IT Schools Africa (ITSA) was sown as an old computer was thrown into a skip. Monis Khalifa, ITSA’s IT Manager watched as the computer was dumped and thought to himself, is there not a better way to recycle old computers? He mentioned this to his friend Michael Ratcliffe, and between the two of them, they decided that there definitely was a better way - to send them to African schools!
Subsequently IT Schools Africa was established in 2004; operations started the following year with the renovation of a warehouse in Cheltenham and from there the first used computers were shipped in a container to Africa.
The same year the charity also began working with the Inside-Out Trust, establishing its first prison refurbishment workshop in HMP Winchester.
In 2006 ITSA formed a partnership with Computers for African Schools (CFAS). ITSA took over responsibility from CFAS for the country programmes in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe in 2011. During that year the number of computers sent to Africa passed the 30,000 mark.
In 2013 we donated our first e-Learning Centre to Chipasula Secondary School and in 2017 that number had risen to 16.
We are proud to announce that at the start of 2019 we have donated a total of 24 e-Learning labs to secondary schools, transforming education and future opportunities for the students.
