Our approach in Africa

Improving IT education in Africa
According to the ITU (the UN's specialised agency for ICT) the proportion of households in Africa with access to a computer is 9%, compared to over 75% of households in Europe.

The global digital divide is closely linked to differences in economic development, literacy, schooling and education levels.  For instance some schools have such limited resources; one computer might be shared between ten children. Furthermore, digital illiteracy is a barrier to further education, with students struggling to complete coursework and dissertations without access to a computer.

Crucially IT skills are essential for young people in today's digital world to access better paid jobs. Without an IT literate workforce, countries are less able to broaden their economy and access the benefits of the information revolution.

Improving education in Africa
We work to ensure students have reliable, quality access to a computer. We encourage the sustainable use of the computers, to ensure they are used effectively for as long as possible.

We subsidise the price of the computers, to contribute towards the cost of refurbishing and shipping equipment. It also enables us to make routine visits to schools as well as providing ongoing technical support.
