First shipment of Rotary computers to Tanzania PDF Print E-mail

On Thursday 23rd April 2009 representatives from Cheltenham Rotary Clubs and IT Schools staff and volunteers marked the shipment of 240 computers to Tanzania.

This is the first shipment in a joint project involving five Rotary clubs in Cheltenham, the Rotary club of Bahari, Dar-es-Salaam and IT School Africa, that will provide a total of 700 computers to Tanzanian schools.

The Rotary Clubs of Cheltenham, Cheltenham Cleeve Vale, Cheltenham Sunrise, North Cotswold and Severn Vale have together raised £32,000 and run a number of computer collection events in support of the project.

In Tanzania, the Rotary Club of Bahari, Dar-es-Salaam, in partnership with the Tanzania Education Authority, and the British Council, have established a technical centre and will be responsible for distributing the computers to the schools and undertaking teacher training.

Bob Price, President of Chetenham Cleeve Vale Rotary Club who led the project commented "This is a great example of Rotary in action, at home and in Tanzania.  The clubs here and in Dar-es-Salaam have been working together to improve the education of children in Tanzania, thus helping to lift them out of poverty"
