Oyoko is a small community of 7,000 people in the Eastern region of Ghana, 4 miles north of Koforidua. ITSA has provided 30 computers to Oyoko to set up a computer laboratory, which enables the children to become IT literate, gives them access to a broader range of educational materials, improving their education and raising their employment prospects. The majority of the population in Oyoko are farmers. Farming provides less income and opportunities for the young, many of whom are unemployed. There are 5 schools in Oyoko with approximately 600 students (aged 10-18). All the schools lack basic resources such as textbooks and computers. As a result, most of the children only receive a basic level of education and leave school without the necessary skills to earn a decent income. The project is being used as a case study for using IT as a catalyst for the development of a community. |
